Which Montgomery County train towns are walkable?
Many of the best commuter towns in Montgomery County have a train station right in the middle of a walkable downtown with shops, restaurants, and coffee within a few blocks. Ambler, Ardmore, Narberth, Jenkintown, Glenside, Conshohocken, Lansdale, Hatboro, and North Wales all have stations close to their main streets.
Living within walking distance of the station means you can skip the parking lot entirely, which is a real advantage at the busiest stations. Explore each town on our neighborhood pages:

How often do trains run from Montgomery County?
On these lines, weekday trains generally run at least once an hour during the middle of the day, with more trains during the morning and evening rush. The Lansdale/Doylestown Line also has express trains at rush hour that skip several inner stops, which is why Ambler and Lansdale can be noticeably faster at peak times. Weekend service is lighter, so check the schedule if you plan to ride on Saturdays or Sundays.
How much does it cost to park at SEPTA stations?
SEPTA reduced the daily rate at all of its parking garages, including the garages at Lansdale Station and Norristown Transit Center, from $4 to $2 through the end of 2026. Surface lots at popular stations can fill early on weekdays, which is another reason buyers who commute every day often focus on homes within walking or biking distance of the station.
What do SEPTA fare zones mean for my commute?
Regional Rail fares are based on zones. Stations closer to Center City, like Narberth and Ardmore, are in Zone 2. Most of the stations in this guide are in Zone 3, and Lansdale and North Wales are in Zone 4. A higher zone means a higher fare, so the farther you live, the more a monthly pass costs. Check SEPTA.org for current fares.
How do I choose the right commuter town?
The fastest ride is not always the best fit. When we help commuters compare towns, we look at:
Total door to door time, including the walk or drive to the station and the walk from Suburban Station or Jefferson Station to your office
Train frequency at the times you actually travel
Home prices and property taxes, which vary widely from the Main Line to the North Penn area
Walkability and what you want within a few blocks of home
Backup options, like a second line nearby or easy access to the Turnpike, Route 309, or I-76
SEPTA updates its schedules four times a year, so always check the current timetable on SEPTA.org before you commit to a commute.
